What
is an IP Address?
An IP address is a string of four numbers, each between 0
and 255, separated by periods, that is used by computers on
the Internet to talk to each other. Because there aren't an
unlimited number of IP addresses, most ISPs have fewer IP
addresses than they have customers. For this reason, they
need assign each customer an IP address from a pool of currently
available addresses each time the user logs on. While this
method allows Internet Service Providers to conserve IP address
use, it means that users won't have the same address each
time they log in, and therefore can't have any single domain
name consistently point to their IP address. This fact prevents
users from having maximum power over the Internet. Having
a dynamic IP address means that you can only contact other
computers on the Internet; you cannot have them connect to
your computer. One consequence of this fact is that you can't
have servers (web, ftp, telnet, irc, etc.) run on your computer.
What
is the difference between Static and Dynamic IP addresses?
Static IP addresses do not change, but are fixed for the
life of an Internet service contract. Static IP addresses
are typically found on high-volume commercial Internet connections.
Most ISP's charge a premium monthly fee if you opt to have
a static IP address. We have seen some company's charge $50
a month extra.
Dynamic IP addresses,
however, change over time. Dynamic IP addresses are found
on dial-up account, DSL, Cable, Satellite, Wireless, and many
lower cost Broadband connections. They keep costs down
by using a pool of IP addresses much smaller than their actual
userbase.
Can
I use DNS Services with a static, or fixed IP?
Yes. MyServer.org DNS
Services allow you to use a static IP, you simply use either
our web based DNS management console or our application based
console to set your records. Rest asured your domains will
allways come up having your DNS resolution hanndled by our
world-class DNS network.
What
is Dynamic DNS?
Dynamic DNS
is a service for people whose Internet Service Providers (ISPs)
assign them a dynamic (different each time) IP address when
they connect to the Internet. The service allows users to
have a static domain name that always points to their current
dynamic IP address.
A common way to overcome
this problem has been to get a static IP address from your
Internet Service Provider, so that when you connect to the
Internet, you will always be assigned the same IP address.
Many ISPs charge around US$100 or more per year for this service,
and some charge considerably more.
Dynamic DNS is a service that associates your current dynamically
assigned IP address with a static domain name, allowing you
to access your computer remotely, or set up a web, ftp, telnet,
mail, irc, or similar server on your machine, without the
expense associated with a static IP address.
The service takes just minutes to set up, and provides an
inexpensive alternative to static IPs without any drawbacks
in functionality.
With a Dynamic DNS account from Myserver.org, the Dynamic
DNS client, running on your machine, can be used to send your
current dynamic IP address (each time you log on with your
ISP) to Myserver.org's server, which will change the
IP associated with your static domain name (e.g. yourname.Myserver.org
if your Dynamic DNS Username is yourname).
Packets sent to yourname.Myserver.org will then be
directed to your current dynamic IP address, whatever it may
be, so that those packets can be appropriately be handled
by your web, ftp, telnet or other Internet server.
Creating an account is as simple as filling out the online
Sign Up form,
downloading Dynamic DNS Client from our web site, and
setting up and running the software on your system. Create
your account now and start using MyServer.org Dynamic DNS
today!
Can I use your DNS
services with a port other than 80?
Yes, but this requires you to register for either Basic
Port Relay (HTTP Relay) services or Platinum
Domain services.
Do you offer a test account that I may
use to make sure this is the service I'm looking for?
Yes, you may register for a free account to test the service
with your servers. We have found that giving test accounts
for domain level accounts is not an easy task because you
would need to change the registrar information for your domain
over . We do however offer a test relay account so that you
may test the port relay services. Simply E-Mail Sales@myserver.org
with your request, we will set up an account with a sample
domain name for you to use for 3 days. After 3 days the account
is terminated.
Can
I have multiple accounts?
Yes you can, simply sign up for a second account. You
can run multiple instances of the DNSApp on your computer.
We do ask that you limit yourself to 2 free accounts.
Can I mail my payment
to MyServer.org instead of paying by credit card?
No, Unfortunately
we are unable to process check payments. We have found that
in the past setting up accounts with the premise that the
"check is in the mail" has proven to be unsuccessful.
If you are a business please call our sales department for
a possible exception.
Can I receive mail
for me@mydomain.myserver.org?
The answer to this one isn't so simple... It depends. If you
have a mail server running on your system, mail for your domain
should get there. If you are off-line, it MIGHT get there.
Mail servers generally keep mail spooled for a few days if
it can't be delivered right away. If you have access to a
server that will accept mail for your domain, you can make
your domain's mail get there by using MX records, which are
available in form for editing your account information.
Can
I run an adult or warez server through Myserver.org?
Our Terms of Service outline exactly
what you can and cannot run in association with a Myserver.org
hostname. If you do decide to run an adult or warez server
using a Myserver.org domain name, be advised that we do monitor
many IRC chat rooms and usenet newsgroups for such activity.
We will disable any account we find running such services,
without notice to you, and will not refund your money. If
you have your own domain name you may register for a Domain
or higher account and run whatever you would like. Be advised
though, if we receive complaints from software manufacturers
that you are posting copyrighted material on your site and
it is brought to our attention we are legally obligated to
terminate your account without refund of any kind.
Can
I run services on my personal Cable, Dialup, or DSL line using
Myserver.org?
Yes and no. Myserver.org is not concerned with the type of
connection you are using to operate services, only the content.
It is, however, against the acceptable use policies of many
cable and DSL providers to operate such services on a personal
connection. We suggest you check with your provider's acceptable
use policy before signing up. We do not offer refunds.
Can
I connect from behind a firewall, NAT, or proxy?
If you are behind a firewall, adding a hostname will only
make an alias to your firewall and not your individual machine.
In order to direct the requests to a computer behind the firewall
you must setup port forwarding on the firewall. If you have
control over the firewall, NAT or proxy you can open certain
ports to allow access for outside connections. If this is
the case, MyServer.Org Dynamic DNS will work fine behind a
firewall, NAT or proxy. In some situations your IP address
may not show up properly. When this happens you can use alternate
methods to set up the proper IP address. Information on how
to do this is in the manual for your firewall, NAT or proxy.
Here is a step by step instruction sheet for the Linksys
DSL router.
Why would I need
Dynamic DNS
If you own a domain name on the Internet then you need Dynamic
DNS. Dynamic DNS can be very useful if you access the Internet
with a Dialup modem, cable modem, DSL modem, etc. More later
about how it can also be useful even if you have a static
IP address. More often these days you are given a DHCP address
when using the Internet. If youve invested in the Domain
Name Game, and you have a DHCP address, youll
want our help to make your domain names follow you wherever
you go. Most likely your IP address changes each time you
logon to the Internet or your ISP periodically changes your
IP address. This makes it hard to host any services on your
computers, I.E. www server, ftp server, smtp server, pop3
server, netmeeting, game rooms, etc. Dynamic DNS from MyServer.org
gives you the flexibility to point any host name anywhere
at anytime without waiting for the typical 1-3 day TTL (Time-To-Live)
to expire or the typical waiting game with domain registrars
to update root servers.
I have my own domain
name already and would like to use your dynamic DNS - what
do I need to do?
Follow these simple steps to have MyServer.org provide your
DNS services.
1) You need
to change the Name Serve' addresses that are listed for your
domain name through your domain registrar. You typically go
to the website where you bought your domain name from, I.E.
Verisign, Network Solutions, Register.com, etc and change
them there.
2) You have
to specify at least 2 different NameServers' for your domain,
here are our name server addresses. We recommend that you
use all 4 of them. Most registrars allow 4.

5) Customize
your domain records to point them wherever you wish.
Can I have a set
of host names that get updated for my home computer and a
set of host names for my work computers?
Yes. MyServer.org allows you to run multiple instances
of the DNS App or the web based interface from different locations.
We also give you the ability to select which DNS records dynamically
update on which computer you are running the app on. We give
you total flexibility over all of your records.
Can I have multiple
domain names on my account?
You can add as many domain names to your account as you'd
like. You only need one account to add as many domains as
you want. Other services charge a per domain fee. We can attach
each domain to your account and you can manage all the records
independently for each domain with a single login. This offer
is only valid if the registrant information match on each
domain. Any domain you add to your account must be a domain
you have already registered and you must be the legal owner
of the domain. We verify each domain registered to our servers
before releasing the domain to your account. We do offer an
ISP solution for multiple domain
names registered to multiple people or organizations.
Can I run a mail
server using a MyServer.org free account?
Yes, using the DNS App 2.0 you now have the ability
to create MX records pointing to your dynamic IP address.
What is a domain
name server?
Name servers perform the critical task of translating
Internet domain names to the address numbers needed to connect
online.
Does MyServer.org
do web hosting?
No, MyServer.org only provides DNS hosting. By using the
service it is assumed that you have your own web server running
on your own Internet connection and server. We merely point
web surfers and E-Mail to what ever location you point your
DNS records to.
Dose
MyServer.org have a refund policy?
MyServer.org has a very clear no refund policy. If you have
any type of difficulty please contact our support staff using
either our Support Forum
or via E-Mail.
We are more than happy to assist you with any issues you may
have.
I
am running Linux or Mac O/S, Can I use MyServer.org?
Yes, MyServer.org provides a web based interface which
you can use to add, edit, and delete your DNS records from.
We also provide a web based interface which you can use to
monitor your IP address and automatically change your DNS
records to your current IP address. This service is only available
to Domain level customers using the latest version of Netscape
or Microsoft's Internet Explorer web browser.
Do
you offer Round Robin DNS service?
Yes, with our any of Domain level of service you may create
as many Round Robbin DNS records as you wish with the exception
of port relayed domain's.
Can
I use the MyServer.org services with ANY domain name, even
.TV, .CC, .WS, and other international domains?
Yes, it's
possible to use the MyServer.org
dynamic DNS service with most international domains. Sometimes,
due to strict policy or older legacy systems, some registrars
will NOT allow you to change your DNS to MyServer.org.
For example if you have a .DE domain
(Germany) you cannot move your DNS servers to MyServer.org.
With almost all other international domains there is no problem
in using the MyServer.org
service.
